The Carnaval Del Pueblo, London, SE5.

It's Carnival time in the UK again. This time it's the Carnaval Del Pueblo which takes place on Sunday 6th August 2006 and is a FREE event.

1. The Event.

The Carnaval del Pueblo procession will commence with a spectacular and colourful float procession leaving at 11:30 am from the Mayor’s City Hall through London Bridge, Borough High Street, Elephant & Castle to finish at Burgess Park about 3:00 pm.

This display of vibrant costumes and dances is inspired by the famous carnivals of Rio de Janeiro, Colombia, Bolivia and El Salvador. So be there around that time if you are interested in seeing this.

2. The Venue.

Burgess Park, Camberwell, London SE5 is where the concerts will be held, with Latin bands and various artists. There is also a Fair including stalls with traditional foods, handicraft and a kids Fair.

In this years event there will be well-known musicians and artists from Latin America including Salsa world champions from Puerto Rico and Community groups in full regalia will be showcasing and sharing music, arts and dance representation of the rich cultural heritage from 19 Latin American countries.

5. In the Beginning.

This event, the largest Latin American out-door event in the UK, is now in its seventh year. It started off in Southwark Park in 1999 with 4,000 people attending and has grown to its present size of 100,00 people who attended last years event. About the same or more is expected this year.

6. Conclusion.

So there you have it. Another Latin Carnival in London. I will give you the schedule of events of the artists on stage later on. However, as I said previously, let's hope the good weather holds out until then.

23-07-2006 8:02 pm - Hi Salsera/Salsero. Wanna be a European Salsa Champion??

Hi there.

1. The Event.

Are you a Salsa Dancer and want to be a European Salsa Champion? Well here's your big chance. The UK Salsa Congress run by Paul Young has the honour of hosting the European Salsa Championships for Teams for the first time ever at a major Salsa Congress. It will also host its first ever Official European Bachata Championship.

Before now all these Championships were held outside the Congress circuit so many people had not heard about them. However with the sanction of the IDO (International Dance Organisation) an agreement was made for an official structure for these type of Championships throughout Europe.

2. The Titles.

The titles up for grabs are:

i. Couples Europeans Masters Title "ON 1" - any style.

ii. Couples European Masters Title " ON 2" - any style.

iii. Couples European Bachata Championships - any style.

iv. Teams European Salsa Championships "ON 1" or "ON 2" - any style.

3. What is needed.

(Oh No. I don't have to be a UK resident or reside in the UK during the Championship? I hear you say.) No! No! No! Nothing like that. These Championships are open to the World. Yes you can be any Nationality. From UK, USA or Timbuktu. Anyone can enter. (Please note however even though you may win and be "Out of this World" they will draw the line at Martians, Beings from Pluto and other creatures from Outer Space).

The only criteria that must be met are:

  • All competitors must pay an entry fee of £50 per couple or £20 per team member which includes your lifetime membership of the IDO.

  • If you are full pass attendee of the UK Congress your entry fee and membership of the IDO will be FREE.

  • All competitors must be staying on the Butlins resort over the weekend.

4. Conclusion.

So there is another opportunity for Salsa recognition. The UK Salsa Congress is in 2 months time. So it is worth taking that Advanced Salsa Crash Course for this one and there is even time to do some working out. Or if you want to do things the conventional way check out Salsa Classes and Salsa Clubs.

So when you win one of the coveted titles there is something else to add to your Salsa CV. This could lead you to more exciting things. Remember the movie audition in the yesterday's issue of Salsa Dancing News and Updates?

That's all for now folks. See you tomorrow.

31-07-2006 6:07 pm - Salsa Legend in London!!!

Hi folks. A major Salsa event in London.

London, UK.

1. Jerry Rivera and Orchestra Live.

Salsa Legend Jerry Rivera will be live in London for the first time. London’s most awaited Latin concert is on Sunday 13th August 2006 and it promises to be the best. There will be 8 ½ hours of non stop partying, cocktail drinking, dancing and lots more, in the heart of South East London.

2. Jerry Rivera. Who is he?

Gerardo Rivera Rodríguez was born on 31st July 1973, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and is the son of Edwin Rivera Mercado (director of 'el Trio Los Barons') and Dominga Rodríguez Cedeño. Jerry grew up listening to Salsa performers Eddie Santiago, Frankie Ruiz and Lalo Rodríguez.

During an improvised presentation in a platform on a hotel in the capital city, where his father was working as a musician, he got the opportunity to perform a song in public. That night Jerry was listened to by Salsa singer Tommy Olivencia, who suggested he become a solo artist. Jerry's father produced his first demo and it was heard by CBS Miami's executives, who got astonished and offered to record his first album. It was launched as "Empezando a Vivir".

Next Album "Abriendo Puertas" with songs such as 'Esa Niña', 'Nada sin Ti' and 'Dime' placed Jerry to the top of every radio station's rankings in Puerto Rico, United States and Latin America. With that production he got a Gold Disc (50,000 copies) and 2 platinum ones (100,000 copies) besides a Puerto Rico's Diploma Award.

Jerry's third album, "Cuenta Conmigo", got more than 10 Platinum Discs in Central America, Venezuela and Colombia. He won 2 Lo Nuestro Awards (covered by Billboard Magazine and Univision TV Network): one for Best Male Artist of the Year and another for Album of the Year. He also won another Diploma Award and one 'Las Estrellas' Award in New York. For all his sales which got over the million in copies Sony Discs gave him the Cristal Award.

That year, Jerry toured all over Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Ecuador Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Argentina, Chile, Aruba, Santo Domingo, Canada, United States (Florida, California, Boston, Chicago, New York, Texas, Cleveland, Washington). His fourth Album "Cara de Niño" with songs such as 'Que hay de Malo', 'No Hieras mi Vida' and the song which got the album title had success and preferences among the public, especially young female admirers.
