| 02-08-2006 3:14 am - UK Salsa Congress Approaches!!!
Hi Folks.
Yes! The UK Salsa Congress is rapidly approaching. The UK version of this now regular world famous event was instigated by Paul Young and has established itself as one of the most prestigious Salsa events in the world. It has come a long way since its inauguration 4 years ago at Butlins in Bognor Regis.
There will be an official Salsa Championships for Teams and European Cup for couples for the first time at a Salsa Congress and among the judging panel will be Edie 'The Salsa Freak', Eric Lalta and the current IDO World Champions and Strictly Dance Fever stars (as seen on the BBC) Chris Marques & Jaci Spencer. It looks like Salsa is slowly coming into the dancing mainstream.
There will be a long line up of international and local artists, the best that the world has to offer. This includes Juan Matos, Johnny Vasquez, Tropical Gem, Oliver Pineda and Luda Kroitor (my current favourites), Edie the Salsa Freak, and our own home grown stars Leon Rose, Susan Montero and many more.
Butlins now have a hotel on site and you can now spend the Salsa Congress weekend in luxury. The hotel was there for the last UK Salsa Congress in 2005. I myself will be staying at the hotel for the first time this year so I will let you know what it is like.
I will be reporting more on this super event nearer the time. So look out for future issues. See you tomorrow.
Aubrey

02-08-2006 6:04 pm - Oliver Pineda and Luda Kroitor. Salsa Champions again!!
Hi folks.
1. Best in the World.
Well I said so. I mentioned the dancers from Australia Oliver Pineda and Luda Kroitor who I saw at the West Coast Salsa Congress in May this year and said they stood head and shoulders above the rest of the dancers on show. Well they have proved this again by winning the 2006 World Salsa Open in Puerto Rico last Saturday!
They have now proven that they are the best in the world, already winning the World Salsa Championship "On 2" title in 2005 in New Orleans. This is the 2nd Annual World Salsa Open, which was started last year in order to provide a venue for World championship competition, pitting the best dancers in the world against each other.
2. Oliver. Oliver Pineda, who is Australia’s only 2 time World Salsa Champion was born in Australia of Chilean descent. He is one of Australia's most admired and sought after dancers and instructors.
Apart from Salsa and Mambo, Oliver's dance experience also extends to Rueda, Merengue, Lambada, Samba, Cumbia, Cha Cha, Rumba, Afro Cuban Rumba, Jive and Paso Doble as well as modern dances such as the Waltz , Slow Foxtrot, Quick Step and Jazz.
3. Luda.
Luda, originally from Russia, has been dancing since the age of eleven. She has toured the United States with the musical show 'Burn The Floor' and was also chosen to dance in two series of the Channel 7 reality TV show ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Luda was also the Japanese Open Champion in 1999.
4. Oliver and Luda.
Oliver and Luda were a partnership since Luda was 11 years old. Together they began their journey into studying, teaching and performing all styles of Latin and Dancesport all over Sydney, Australia.
They have won many competitions including the IDO World Salsa Championship in 2001, the World Salsa Championships 2005 in Las Vegas and now the 2006 World Salsa Open in Puerto Rico.
Oliver and Luda have performed at many Salsa Congresses around the world, including the Annual West Coast Salsa Congress in Los Angeles 2003 - 2006, the UK Salsa Congress 2004 and 2005 and the Puerto Rican Salsa Congress 2005 and of course 2006.
5. Oliver and Luda at the UK Salsa Congress.
The UK Salsa Congress will be upon us soon and Oliver and Luda will be performing there. I for one cannot wait.
For more on Oliver and Luda please see Oliver Pineda and Luda Kroitor.
More Salsa news tomorrow. Aubrey

03-08-2006 11:28 pm - Salsa and Latin Snippets worldwide!!
1. London, UK.
Brasil Brasileiro. This summer 50 performers bring alive to Sadler's Wells the spirit that makes Brazil so unique. Famed for its euphoric dance heritage, this is a country where the musical culture of Africa and Europe merged in a melting pot of dance forms to create its own nation rhythm: the Samba.
Brasil Brasileiro shows the samba in all its forms, from its beginnings as a ritual love dance to the excitement of a modern day Rio street carnival. It demonstrates the influence of other genres, from the lightning footwork of forro to the agility of Hip Hop and capoeira, the sensuality of choro, and the groovy moves of batucada.
All the 30 dancers and 15 musicians come from Brazil. They are joined by five renowned singers, all of whom are considered living legends in Brazil, and include Jair Rodrigues and Elza Soares, who recently appeared at the Jazz Café.
The show is conceived and directed by Claudio Segovia, whose numerous Broadway and West End hits include the Olivier Award nominated Tango Argentino, and Black and Blue, nominated for ten Tony Awards.
For more details please see Brasil Brasileiro 2. LA, USA.

05-08-2006 8:48 pm - It's Salsa Congress time!!
1. Bognor Regis, UK.
UK Salsa Congress.
Well. Have you booked yet for the UK Salsa Congress? As I said a few days ago this premier event promoted by Paul Young is approaching fast. So you need to book now!
The ticket prices also go up at the end of August from £129.00 to £139.00 (accommodation not included). So what are you waiting for? Get cracking.
There are about 7 weeks to this Salsa Congress which takes place from 22nd - 24th September 2006, and in this time I will write a series of articles about why this is a fantastic Congress to attend. OK I may be biased as this is my home Congress.
I have been to a few others inside and outside of the UK namely the West Coast Salsa Congress, NY Salsa Congress and the Brit Salsafest (another destined for good things). However I have been to all the UK Salsa Congresses from the start and it has got better and better, having some advantages over the other major ones mentioned. All the signs are that it will be the best this year.
So look out during the coming weeks for these articles.
2. New York, USA.
NY Salsa Congress.
This Salsa Congress promoted by David Melendez will take place on 31st August - 3rd September 2006 at the NY Hilton Hotel. The Launch Party for this Congress will be at the New Wild Palm in the Bronx on 26th August 2006. Performing will be Santo Rico, Latin Jazz Esemble and Lorenz Dance Co. More information about this will be coming soon.
Also the Hilton Hotel has extended the room rate. They have made a deal with the New York Salsa Congress to extend the cut off date to book rooms at the discounted room rate of $158.00 per night until 7th August. After that you will not be able to get any rooms at that price.
This is a Five Star hotel and you will not get anything in mid town Manhattan for that price.
So if you are in New York at that time or are planning to go to this Salsa Congress book now.
That's all for now. See you tomorrow. Aubrey

07-08-2006 3:36 am - Salsa Legend in London. Cont'd!!
Hi folks. Continuing from Salsa Legend in London, the article on 31st July 2006.
London, UK. Jerry Rivera and Orchestra Live.
1. More about Jerry Rivera.
The following year, Jerry got triple Platinum in United States, a double Platinum in Central America, a Latin Music Award (as Salsa Artist of the Year), the Gold Orchid in Venezuela (which was given to him via 'Sabado Sensasional', the most watched TV show in that country), the Congo Gold in Miami, two Lo Nuestro Awards, the Diploma Award once again and the Billboard Latin Award. In 1995 he was nominated for a Grammy Award as singer of the Year in tropical music.
In those two years alone, Jerry had compiled quite a resumé, not limited to the musical arena. Jerry played a small role in "I Like It Like That," a movie with an all-star cast with the likes of Jon Seda, Lauren Velez, Rita Moreno, and the Barrio Boyzz, among others. He appeared as himself in the Lucero novela "Mi destino eres tu." Jerry also appears in the 1996 Banco Popular special, "Al Compás de un Sentimiento," a musical tribute to the legendary composer, Pedro Flores. Here Jerry had the opportunity to sing with Gilberto Santa Rosa and Ruben Blades. Jerry also participated in the Banco Popular's special "Con la musica por dentro" where he sings a duet with Puerto Rican singer Millie.
His following album "Magia" has ten songs from well-known composers such as Omar Alfano, Alejandro Vezzani, Pedro Arroyo, Giovani Jiménez, Mary Lauret, Reinaldo López y Eric Leris. The next album "Fresco" was produced by Sergio George and Cuto Soto, two of the most important salsa producers. In this great production Jerry performs lyrics from the most famous Latin music composers: Rudy Pérez, Manny Benito, Mary Lauret, Alejandro Vezzani, Eric Leris, Raisa Reynoso and Fernando Osorio.
Jerry has now taken a path to pop ballads with great success and has proven himself as a Salsa star with his 17 year career due to his overwhelming mellow voice & natural talent. Jerry a certain key player in the Salsa scene has received Grammy award nominations for his latest album "Ay Mi Vida" which is full of powerful ballads, pop and Salsa and surprisingly a touch of Reggaeton and Techno.
