1. USA.

Miami.

The 2006 World Salsa Federation Championships will take place on 3rd - 5th November at the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming Hotel, 500 S.W. 177th Avenue, Miami, FL 33194. There will also be workshops during the day and shows and dancing during the evenings.

This year, the World Salsa Federation will host a world record 10 World Salsa Championships over 2 days. Also included this year for the third time ever will be the World Youth Salsa Championships and the 5th annual All-Star DanceSport Championships.

On the 3rd day of the convention there will be Dance Performances from some of the best Salsa performers around the World who have put on shows at all the major Salsa Congresses in the World and round off each evening with dancing to the best Salsa music.

So you can take your dancing shoes!

The 2nd of the first Cuban Salsa Congresses takes place in Wales this weekend.

    i. Salsa Republic.

    There is a new format for Salsa Republic at Bar Rez on a Saturday night. There are more classes and earlier opening times.

    Doors now open at 8:30 pm. Classes are:

    • La Rueda with Michael Mandrell - 9:00 pm.


    • Beginners Salsa Lesson - 9:45 pm.


    • Improvers/Intermediate Salsa Lesson with Guest Instructor - 9:45 pm.



    The instructors on rotation will be Miguel De Rica, Michael Mandrel, Iris De Brito and Frank Santos.

    This will be every Saturday except the last Saturday of the month when the club will be next door at the Colosseum.

    1. Spanish Harlem Orchestra are in concert in London next week.

    Grammy nominated Latin music outfit the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, heads to North London for a three-night Jazz Cafe residency next week as part of a European tour.

    2. Who are the Spanish Harlem Orchestra?

    The Spanish Harlem Orchestra was founded in 2000. Aaron Levinson joined forces with salsa giant Oscar Hernandez and together they assembled the band that has become the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

    Spanish Harlem Orchestra is an act that appeals to people of every age, race and disposition. They have made a huge splash on the international touring circuit in places such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Istanbul, Glasgow, Barcelona, London, Paris, Oslo, Zurich and Montreal.

    3. The History.

    The story of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra is the story of the music of the people who nurtured the essence of urban Latino culture in this fabled bastion of urban and ethnic culture in New York City.

    The vibrant East Side community known as El Barrio located to the south of 125th Street, Harlem’s main thoroughfare - is an integral part of new Hispanic culture in New York and has radiated the inextricable flavour of Latino culture to the four corners of the globe.

    Spanish Harlem is the birthplace for Salsa, Latin Soul, Boogaloo and countless other variants within the tropical Latin idiom. From Tito Puente to Marc Anthony, this small enclave has exerted a monumental effect on the sound of American music today.

    4. Who's Who in the band.

    Led by world famous pianist and arranger Oscar Hernandez, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, has quickly established itself as the curators of this tradition borne of El Barrio.

    • This Saturday, MamboCity will be hosting their Monthly Party night at "The Crown Moran Hotel" Cricklewood, with a dance performance by "The Mambo Sisters" from Sweden.


    • Who are "The Mambo Sisters?

      Mambo Sisters is one of Sweden’s most famous salsa dance groups who dance with a cool "On 2" style. Among its members are several dance instructors and winners of the Miss Salsa contest and other major competitions in Sweden.


    • Who's Who in the Group.

      Laia Kinnunen

      Laia, who has been dancing since 1997, is the founder of Mambo Sisters and the group's main choreographer. Only a year later she won the Miss Salsa title at La Isla in Stockholm.

      In 1999 she moved to the UK where she improved her style. She masters all salsa styles, i.e. Cuban, Colombian, Los Angeles style as well as New York style on 2. In 2005, with her partner Alberto Anturi, they came 2nd in the Swedish Championships for couples. They also came 2nd in the Nordic Open Salsa Championships in Denmark in 2006.

      When Laia is not dancing or teaching salsa she practices tango and Kung Fu. She is also a student of anthropology at Stockholm University.

      Anna Dahlberg

      Anna a promising tennis player as a teenager, started salsa classes in 2001 and has not looked back since. She is one of the founding members of the Mambo Sisters. She has continued to improve her dancing through frequent trips to international salsa congresses and, more recently, by taking ballet classes.

      Anna works as an editorial writer at Expressen, the second largest newspaper in Sweden and travels around the world to countries such as Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia.

      Recently, she was awarded the Golden Pen, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious prizes among Swedish journalists.

      Pilar Anturi

      Pilar was born and raised in Bogotá, Columbia. Apart from salsa she also masters different latin folklore dances as well as reggaeton!

      In 1998 she moved to Sweden with her family and now works as a dance instructor. She has won a lot of dance competitions on her own as well as with her twin brother Alberto.

    The Johnston Street Fiesta officially opens at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.

    This is a festival featuring many Spanish speaking countries and was previously known as the Spanish Festival or Hispanic Festival. Famous Street Performers Parade will take you on a cultural journey through Spain and Latin America.

    Stalls are packed with crafts, music, unique products and fresh, delicious food. Food lovers will relish sampling Spanish and Latin American cuisines.

    • Mambo City, Ealing Town Hall.

      This event is run by Robert and Jean White.

      This is the place to be on Fridays. It always has a good atmosphere with a good crowd of people.

      There are three floors for dancing and a seating area where you can chill out. The music is variable with the majority being NY Salsa, Mambo and Cuban Salsa, and now quite a bit of Bachata which is becoming very popular. And of course splatterings of Merengue and Reggaeton.

      There are also classes for all Levels i.e. Beginners and Improvers with Susan, Jean and Trevor, Intermediate with Robert & Maria and Advanced with Alexandre & Katarina. This is followed by the club with dancing to Music by DJ "Johnny G" until 1:00 am.

      There are 3 rooms of music. 1 for Salsa and 2 other dance rooms. The music of Salsa, Cumbia, Punta & Merengue is supplied by top Latin DJ Julian 'the Duke' (but ring number as shown below for up-to-date information).

      This event is promoted by SalsaPassion run by Klaus. He has trained and taught Salsa since 1996 while living in London, San Francisco and Buenos Aires. Since 2001 he has been a UKA (United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dancing, Club Dance Division) certified teacher of dance.

      Klaus’ dance style, technique and teaching methods have been influenced by various British and US champions, such as Leon Rose, Susan Montero, Joseph Koniak, Edie Lewis (the "salsa freak") and Super Mario.

      This is a drop in class. No booking is necessary. There is free practicing afterwards.

    • Salsology Workshop, Manchester.

      The next Salsology Skool takes place on Saturday 2nd December 2006 from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm at The Lancashire Health and Racquet Club in Middleton, Manchester.

      Salsology is Manchester's premier club night and is run by Emma Moore.

      The very first Skool date was a huge success with many people turning up for the workshops or to take the opportunity for some relaxed practise.

      This Saturday features ladies and men’s styling/spinning classes by Kate, Emma and Mushi with an emphasis on Styling & Spinning for both "On1" and "On2" dancers. Plus there are 4 hours of social dancing with DJs Emma, Gary Thomas and Chris Mee.

      The schedule is as follows:

        Workshops:

      • 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Beginners On2 with Mushi.


      • 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Ladies' Styling & Spinning (Improvers) with Emma & Kate.

        This time half the time will be spent learning another basic shines routine incorporating body movement and arm patterns, and the other half of the class on spinning technique.


      • 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Ladies' Styling & Spinning (Int/Adv) with Emma & Kate.

        The last time you learnt a 4 section routine.This time you'll learn a new routine including 1 section recapped from the last time, 2 new sections and a spinning section.


      • 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Men's Footwork, Styling, Spinning (All) with Mushi.


      • Social:

      • 7:00 pm -11:00 pm Social Dancing with DJs Gary Thomas, Emma and Mambomagic.

      The West Coast Salsa Congress ( Australia)

      The West Coast Salsa Congress (Australia) is the biggest weekend of Salsa and Latin dancing to hit the city of Perth, Western Australia and will take place on 1st December - 3rd December 2006.

      Instructors and Performers present will be Jaime Jesus, Little Liz and many more.

      The West Coast Salsa Congress is now the official Australian Qualifier for the World Salsa Championships and this takes place on Sunday, 3rd December from 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm at Fremantle Town Hall, Western Australia.
