03-03-2007 4:49 am - Salsa This Weekend!!!

  • UK.

    • Salsa Fusion. Saturday 3rd March 2007.

I have been speaking occaionally about Salsa Fusion which used to be the place to be up to 5 years ago when it was at The Notre Dame Hall in Leicester Square. It moved to its present location but it did not have that unique 'Salsa Fusion' atmosphere which 'The Notre Dame Hall' gave it. Even though it was packed to the rafters on the opening night it was not the same and many regulars stopped going regularly including myself. I used to look forward to my Salsa Fusion night every fortnight but alas it was not to be anymore. I went occasionally when there was nothing else on.

However about 10 months ago I noticed a distinct change in the atmosphere. There was a buzz about the place. Surely this must be a coincidence. Anyway I went back the following fortnight and it was the same. The magic was coming back. I have been going regularly since.

The last time I went they had moved one of the rooms to a different location which made the club look even bigger. I tend to go now a bit later (about 11.30 pm - midnight). However the last couple of times I was told that that the club is packed from about 10.00 pm and there was only now just enough room to dance. Sounds like the Salsa Fusion of old.

2 weeks ago I went and I thoroughly enjoyed myself even though I went a bit after 12 midnight. There was a fantastic atmophere, lots of willing partners to dance with (as one of my friend told me last time 'I love it here. There are no cliques and lots of new girls to dance with. ') and good music. Salsa Fusion in Great Portland Street is now taking on its own unique atmosphere. I will definitely be going earlier from now on.

So if you have never been to Salsa Fusion try it out this Saturday.

      SALSA FUSION

There is 1 superb venue with 2 Fully Air Conditioned rooms. There is a FREE SALSA Class with Richard Pierre.

DJ Ara will be in The Salsa Room playing 100% Authentic Salsa for Real Salseros while DJ Alberto Nunez from Venezuela will be playing Salsa, Timba, Reggaeton, Merengue and Latin Groove in the Fusion Room.

See Salsa Fusion 1 and Salsa Fusion 2.

Time: 9:00 pm to 2:00 am.

Location: 229 Great Portland Street. London W1.

      Admission: £8.

  • LA. USA. Mama Juanas. Sunday 4th March 2007.

Mama Juana's Latin Lounge. 3707 Cahuenga Boulevard, Studio City, CA 91604. Phone: 818.505.8636.

    Francisco Auabella.

Enjoy a unique and dance to the rhythm of conga legend and bata master Francisco Aguabella.

Francisco Aguabella was one of the original Cubans who arrived in New York during the 50's who along with Celia Cruz, Chano Pozo, Patato Valdez, Candido, Mongo Santamaria and others, firmly established the Latin Tinge in Jazz.

Originally from Mantanzas he is a master of Bata, a sacred drum style with intact African roots. As such he is considered a Priest of the music and has preserved the Cuban tradition undiluted.

Since his first engagement with Dizzy he has had the opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of American Jazz from Peggy Lee to Santana. His latest Release "Cubacan", dedicated to Tito Puente, shows both musical diversity and stylistic purity. This is west coast music recorded in Los Angeles and features the Banda Brothers best known for their work with Poncho Sanchez.

Also featured is the horn work of Charles Owens and Justo Almario. Cubacan includes covers of "My Favorite Things", "Tin Tin Deo and "Autumn Leaves", all with original arrangements and fresh takes. There is also Papa Luca's "Guajira Para Los Pollos", Dizzy's "Fiesta Mojo" and several Aguabella originals including beautiful Ballads.

This is classic Latin Jazz from an artist who has lived his entire adult life as an American but stayed quintessentially cuban. He is also yet another Cuban artist in his 70's still producing vital and engaging music. This speaks to the restorative power of Cuba's African rhythms. All of this music is made for dancing as well as listening and has that basic sense of joy and love of life that is intrinsic to all Latin Music.

    Time: Sunday 4th March 2007.

Location: Mama Juana's Latin Lounge. 3707 Cahuenga Boulevard, Studio City, CA 91604. Phone: 818.505.8636.

    Cost: $10.

See you soon.

31-03-2007 4:38 am - Latest Salsa News from the UK and Salsa This Weekend Worldwide!!

1. Salsa News from the UK.

  • UK Salsa Congress moved to new location and time.

The 6th UK International Salsa Congress is moving to The Bournemouth International Centre and the date has been changed to 12th -14th October 2007.

    More about this soon.

  • Latin Dance Academy.

Susanna Monterowill be starting new courses for her Latin Dance Academy. Apart from Susana the other instructors will include Super Mario and Inaki Fernandez.

Please see Latin Dance Academy for more details.

  • On a more serious note.

On February 26th 2007 Salsa Instructor Joe Lantelli (of Joe and Sinead fame), was unjustly convicted of sexually assaulting a salsa student during private dance lessons.

Who would think that such an occurrence could actually happen on the Salsa scene?

I do not know Joe but from what I've seen of him he does not seem to be the type of person that would do such a thing? Are we guys therefore not safe on the Salsa scene or is this I hope a one off and very rare occurrence?

For more on this please see The Joe Lantelli Story.

2. What's coming on the UK Salsa Club Scene.

  • Scala Latina. Bank Holiday events.

Scala Latina is back for its first bank holiday event on Sunday 8th April 2007.

Scala Latina has a monthly club now, but in my opinion it has lost that certain atmosphere and feel of the Bank holidays as there are a lot less people who come then and who leave a lot earlier than the closing time.

The bank holiday events are always treated as a special event with Salseros from the North of England and even the continent attending. And they stay until the end, 6:00 am.

I much prefer the bank holiday events.

For more on the up and coming Scala Latina events please see Scala Latina Sunday 8th April 2007.
