Find out what you did not know about Salsa Dancer Leon Rose.
1. Introduction
Leon Rose is well known as one of the freshest innovators in the international Salsa scene. This is the background of his life, his early years and how he became what he is today.
2. In the Beginning
I first noticed Leon when I used to go to a club called villa steffano situated in Holborn, London in the late 1990's. He, together with Super Mario and Susanna Montero were always on the dance floor doing their thing. Although he says at the time he started there he was lost, it must have been a while after when I saw him because he looked far from lost and there was always a queue of ladies to dance with him.
3. Leon's early life.
Leon was born and educated in London and comes from a Caribbean background. He attended The Anna Scher Theatre School and took part in many stage and popular children's shows including 'Grange Hill' (I remember watching that as a kid and there were many Leon Rose types in the show. So any one of them could have been him.) to several televised dramas, one alongside Dame Judy Dench. He has performed on television and stage, including Top of the Pops (BBC), and appeared at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of the Princess Diana Landmine Fund.4. Leon the Champion Performer
Leon has won major dance competitions such as the 2000 UK Bacardi Salsa Championship with Susan Montero, the 2001 Salsa Club championship and 2003 Aji con mango competitions.
He has been influenced by instructors such as Elder Sanchez and the Salsateca Team, Robert Charlemagne and Ramiro Zapata of Tropicana Dance School.
Then there are the international instructors and performers such as Edie the Salsafreak, Nelson Flores and Eddie Torres.
5. Leon the Choreographer and Instructor
Leon is in demand for teaching worldwide and teaches in places such as Australia, Morocco and Puerto Rico. He is also the choreographer and principal dancer for his dance group 'The London Allstar Latin Dancers'. He is also working on a large show, part of which is called 'The Leon Rose Project' which has been previewed at some clubs and at one of the UK Salsa Congress's recently. Not much is known about this large show at the moment but apparently there will be previews at Salsa Congresses around the world.
He also runs clubs and classes called 'Salsa on Wednesdays, Ruby Blues and the world famous SOS (Salsa on Sundays) with Tamambo. So he aspires to work with the novice and the advanced.
