Any footwear extending above the ankle.

Clog.
A thick soled wooden shoe sometimes with leather upper.
Cuban Heel.
A broad heel of moderate height with a slightly tapered back and straight front, used in shoes and some boots.

Heel.
The heel is the raised component under the rear of the shoe.
Hide.
The skin of animals.

Inner Sole.
See Insole.
Insole.
A layer of material shaped to the bottom of the last and sandwiched between the outsole (or midsole) and the sole of the foot inside the shoe. The insole board is necessary in shoes that are constructed using cemented or Goodyear welt techniques because it is the attachment for upper and lower components.

Lace Up.
Any low cut shoe fastened by lacings such as an Oxford or Blucher.
Lacquers.
Any of various clear or colored synthetic coatings made by dissolving nitrocellulose or other cellulose derivatives together with plasticizers and pigments in a mixture of volatile solvents and used to impart a high gloss to surfaces.
Leather.
Leather is a material created through the tanning of hides, pelts and skins of animals.
Linings.
In quality shoes the quarters and vamps are lined to enhance comfort and durability.

Micro-cellular rubber.
A foam rubber material usually of high density containing very small cells. The sizes of the cells have not been quantified. This type of foam/rubber can be made from materials such as urethanes, polypropylene, thermoplastic elastomers, thermoplastic olefins, and polyvinyl chloride. It is used in shoe linings and soles, automotive bumpers and springs, and in gasketing.
Moccasin.
The term moccasin originates from the Algonquian language for foot covering. Originally it described a simple one-piece hide, wrapped round the foot and held on with rawhide thongs. Later the Indians gradually stylised the moccasin by adding the moccasin plug, fringes and coloured beads, which depicted rank and occupation. Today moccasin shoes usually describe imitation moccasins, which had their origins in Norway
Monks.
Similar to Derby Shoes but with a cross over section to fastenthe quarters with a side buckle.
Mule.
A backless shoe or slipper with or without a heel.

Nap.
A soft fluffy surface.
Nappa.
Soft leather made by a special process from the skin of sheep or goats.
Napped.
Fuzzy.
Non-polymeric.
Not Polymeric. See Polymeric.
Non-woven synthetic.
Non-woven materials are flat flexible porous sheet structures that are produced by interlocking layers of fibers, filaments, or film-like filamentary structures. Not the type of shoes you would choose for Salsa Dancing, is it?
Nu-bucks.
A very fine suede.

Oils.
In a general sense, this is a chemical compound that is not miscible with water, and is in a liquid state at ambient temperatures. Such substances are sometimes described as hydrophobic (meaning water hating) or lipophilic (meaning fat loving).

Padding.
A thin, cushionlike mass of soft material used to fill, to give shape, or to protect against jarring, scraping, or other injury.
Patent.
Such black leather finished to a hard glossy surface and used especially for shoes and clothing accessories.
Plastic.
Plastic is a Polymer. See Polymer.
Polymer.
The simplest definition of a Polymer is something made of many units. Many common classes of Polymers are composed of hydrocarbons. Polymers have many inherent properties that can be enhanced by a wide range of additives to broaden their use and application.
Polymeric.
A material that is made up of Polymer.
Polyurethane.
Any of various polymers containing the urethane radical. A wide variety of synthetic forms are made and used as adhesives or plastics or paints or rubber.
Pumps.
Heeled shoes with low cut fronts and usually no fastening.
Q
Quarter.
The complete upper part of the shoe behind the vamp line covering the sides and backpart.
R
Resin.
Resin is a hydrocarbon secretion of many plants, particularly coniferous trees. They are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, and are supposed to be formed by the oxidation of the essential oils. It is valued for its chemical constituents and uses such as varnishes and adhesives.

Sandal.
Today any open shoe who's upper consists of any decorative or functional arrangement of straps.
Shank.
The shank bridges between the heel breast and the ball tred.
Sole.
The term sole derives from 'solea' a Latin word meaning soil or ground.
Split leather.
Skin sliced in layers to give uniform thickness to the piece (grain side). Split leather (inside) is trimmed and finished as suede. Cheap leathers are sometimes pigmented splits with embossed imitation grain.
Suede.
A treatment applied to the flesh side of a skin to produce a leather with a soft,velvet-like, napped finish.
Synthetic.
Relating to, involving, or of the nature of Synthesis. Synthesis is the combining of separate elements or substances to form a coherent whole.

Tanned.
Tanning is the process of conversion of putrescible skin into non putrescible leather. Putrefaction is the decomposition of animal proteins, especially by anaerobic microorganisms. Material that is subject to putrefaction is called putrescible. Leather thus formed is called 'Tanned' leather.
Thermoplastic rubber.
Thermoplastic is a plastic or resin compound that softens when heated and hardens again when cooled. Examples are styrene polymers and copolymers, acrylics, cellulosics, polyethylenes,vinyls, nylons, and the various fluorocarbons materials.
Throat.
The central part of the vamp just proximal to the toe box.

Uppers.
The upper part of a shoe. Sections of the upper include

Quarter.
Toebox.
Throat.
Insole board.
Topline.
V
Vamp.
The vamp covers the dorsum of the foot (includes the tongue piece) and superior aspects over the toes.
W
Welt.
The strip of material which joins the upper to the sole. Most shoes will be bonded by Goodyear-welted construction.
Waxes.
Any of various natural, oily or greasy heat-sensitive substances,consisting of hydrocarbons or esters of fatty acids that are insoluble in water but soluble in nonpolar organic solvents.
