15-06-2007 5:11 am - Explosive Cuban Salsa Festival in London This Weekend!!!

Salsa News Worldwide.

  • UK - London.

London is the place to be this weekend. The highly popular yearly Latin Festival Carnaval de Cuba is here and as well as two event packed days on Saturday and Sunday 16th and 17th June 2007 there are 2 after parties on each day.

However let's continue from last week with the Carnival de Cuba.

    The Carnaval De Cuba.

As I said in an earlier Blog, every summer in London there are a string of Latin and other cultural festivals highlighting the culture of the residents of this multi-ethnic society, highlighting their traditions, delicacies and most of all the music.

    1. The Conga Procession.

The Conga procession has become a colourful fixture of Carnival de Cuba. Children are welcome to go to the free Carnival workshop and join in the procession. A carnival educational initiatives in Southwark schools is also run in co-operation with Southwark council with local children making costumes and becoming an integral part of the procession.

In 2006 the Carnival de Cuba Conga line was led by the great Santiago band, Sur Caribe. This year the procession will again be led by Sur Caribe, along with the red-hot Santiago Conga band Septeto Tipico Tivoli.

    2. Food and Drinks.

There will be lots of exotic dishes and drinks available at the Carnaval de Cuba. Don't eat before you leave home. Make sure you are hungry.

    i. Cantina and Cocktails.

This year there is a lot more room which will cater for more bars and cantinas. The cocktail bars, run by the famous Cubana bar-restaurant, will serve the best Mojitos along with Daiquiri Carnival - daiquiris prepared with fresh guava, mango, passion fruit, strawberries, fresh lime juice and Cuban rum, along with Cuba Libre, the very best beer from Budvar and home-made Sangria - all at reasonable prices.

Mojitos and Tropical Daiquiris prepared with Ron Caney, the very best Cuban rum is just £3.75.

Home-made Sangria, Smoothies made with fresh tropical fruits and organic raw cane sugar, freshly-squeezed orange juice made with Cuban oranges awaits you at Carnival de Cuba 2007.

    ii. Food.

The Cuban food will include famous dishes such as Pollo Criollo, Congri Santiago and BBQ Cuban Pork for just a fiver - all prepared with free-range chicken and pork. Or why not try char-grilled skewers of marinated free-range chicken, organic chorizo and fresh guava for £3.50. There will be BBQ organic chorizo, veggie dishes, ceviche, fresh tropical fruit cups and much more ranging from £1.50 to £3.50.

There will also be a huge range of other foods - from Latin to Chinese and Caribbean to good old British burgers and hot dogs. We've also got fresh coffee stands, organic cakes, freshly-made ice cream and loads more.

    3. Getting There.

Carnival de Cuba 2007 is located at Southwark Park, a beautiful, large Green Flag award winning park bordering the Thames, just a few minutes by Tube from central London on the Jubillee Line. The event will take place at the north end of the park, close to the bandstand, bordering Jamaica Rd - access will only be by the two Jamaica Rd gates which are a two minute walk from Bermondsey Tube Station.

    i. By Tube: Bermondsey or Canada Water (Jubilee Line) are both a 2/3 minute walk from Southwark Park. Surrey Quays or Rotherhithe (East London Line) are also close.

    ii. By Bus: Numbers 1, 47, 188, 199, 225, 381, 395, P13.

iii. Car/bike parking: The car park is located at Hawkstone Road at the south end of the park . Bikes can be parked at Hawkstone Road and Gomm Road. There is also car parking in the roads surrounding the park, but please check the restriction signs carefully.

iv. Train: The Jubilee Line puts Southwark Park a short ride from most of the London main-line stations.

    4. The Line Up.

Salsa News Worldwide.

  • UK - London.

    1. The Carnaval De Cuba.

As I said in an earlier Blog, every summer in London there are a string of Latin and other cultural festivals highlighting the culture of the residents of this multi-ethnic society, highlighting their traditions, delicacies and most of all the music.

We will start with the first and one of the largest of these, The Carnaval de Cuba.

The Carnival de Cuba is the biggest Cuban carnival in Europe and this year it takes place at a different venue this year, Southwark Park - just 5 mins by Tube from Waterloo.

It brings the best bands, including again this year Sur Caribe accompanied by Pedrito Calvo, direct from Cuba.
The dance stage also groans with talent - a Reggaeton show by Andrea Stewart, Iris de Brito, Homero, Paola
and Lazaro, Osbanis, free dance workshops and top DJs.

At this year's event there will be much more space, more delicious bars serving fresh tropical smoothies, freshly made Mojitos prepared with Cuba's top rum, Ron Caney and tropical daiquiris, a Cuban food court, cantinas and a world food zone - all at reasonable prices.

On the Main Stage, the lineup includes:

    • Sur Caribe

Back by popular demand, Sur Caribe are the essence of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba's second city and have become one of Cuba's most popular acts because of their approachable, danceable style.

Sur Caribe will also play at the Children of the Andes Carnival de Cuba pre-party on June 14th and at Glastonbury on June 23rd.

    • Pedrito Calvo

Pedrito was the soul of the legendary Los Van Van for 26 years and now has his own musical group, La Justicia. He is on a solo tour for Carnival de Cuba and will play sets with Sur Caribe.

    • Septeto Tipico el Tivoli

On their inaugural tour of the UK Septeto Tipico el Tivoli come direct from Santiago de Cuba. Together since 1995 they are famous for maintaining a characteristic sela of traditional Conga beats mixed with vibrant energy.

They have toured Europe and Mexico, performed at key Cuban festivals, and have been on Cuban television and at Expo Cuba.

    • Papo Record

Papo Record has performed widely in both niche and top venues throughout Cuba, from every small underground club to Havana's National Theatre and Jazz Café. Last May his CD won the Cubadisco Award 2006 for Best Hip Hop Album.

He has also toured Panama and Brazil and now lives in the UK.

    • Kid Afrika

Kid Afrika mixes Latino rap with smooth, soulful vocals, laid down over a backdrop of hip hop, Reggaeton and Afro-Cuban beats. One of Cuba's hottest rapping talents he has performed in many clubs and festivals throughout Europe and has gained the reputation of being one of the most charismatic, energetic and talented Latin performers in the UK today.

    • Leximan

Leximan moved to London from Santiago de Cuba three years ago. His Cubatón sound mixes Reggaeton with Afro-Cuban Hip-Hop, Salsa, Rumba and Mambo beats.

More on the Carnaval De Cuba next week.

    2. MamboCity.

12-05-2007 3:23 am - Up and Coming Salsa Events Worldwide and Salsa This Weekend!!!

Up and Coming Salsa Events.

  • UK - London.

Aha. Summer is here and there's nothing like an outdoor Latin Festival to bring the city to life.

Every summer in London there are a string of Latin and other cultural festivals highlighting the culture of the residents of this multi-ethnic society, highlighting their traditions, delicacies and most of all the music.

The largest of these festivals are the Carnaval del Pueblo and the Carnival de Cuba. As these festivals approach I will give you an insight into each and everyone of them.

But first I will start with the Carnaval de Cuba.

Carnival de Cuba - Larger than ever and a new venue.

The attendance of Carnival de Cuba 2006 was 86,000 strong. Due to this rapid increase in numbers for 2007 the
Carnival de Cuba is moving down the river to a larger site - Southwark Park on 16th to 17th June. This new venue offers much more space, far better facilities and excellent transport links (Southwark Park is only three stops on the Jubilee line from Waterloo and one stop from Canary Wharf). Entry is free!

    Impressive musical line up.

    The line up includes:

    • Chart topping Sur Caribe joined by the iconic Pedrito Calvo, formerly of Los Van Van.

    • The great Conga band, Septeto Tipico Tivoli from Santiago-de-Cuba, the island's second city and the soul of music, dance and carnival.

    • Direct from Cuba, 'Reggaeson' sensation Sangre Latina.

    • UK-based Cuban reggaeton stars Papa Record.

    • Kid Afrika.

    • Leximan.

For 2007 there will also be many more cantinas and food stands, along with juicy tropical cocktail and smoothie bars. So much more exotic delicacies to sample.

As usual there will be the massive Conga procession led by Guillermo Davis and the Cuban bands along with local school kids, free children's carnival face-painting, dance workshops, longer hours and better facilities than before.

I will keep you up to date with this festival in the coming weeks.

  • USA - LA.

    West Coast Salsa Congress 2007.

This the biggest Salsa Congress in the world (or at least it was up to last year when it was in Salsa Land is on 24th - 7th May 2007. It is moving into a hotel this year limiting the attendance to only 2,500 Attendees. This event should therefore sell out very early!

There are over 50 workshops and only one performance show per night leaving more time for social dancing!

Everything is in one Location and there will be no more shuttle buses.

More about the West Coast Salsa Congress later.
